There have been a lot of point guards that have redefined the NBA in years past like Bob Cousy way back in the day, Magic Johnson with the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers and most recently Steve Nash with the run and gun Phoenix Suns, but now it seems it’s time for a new era at the point guard position with the addition of foreign phenom Ricky Rubio of Spain. This 18 year old kid from Spain has yet to play a single minute in the NBA, but he made a huge impression with how he played in the Beijing Olympics recently, especially when Spain faced off against the United States. The problem last summer was that Rubio was still too young to play in the NBA at just 17, but now he is a year old and eligible to contribute to the NBA level with his crazy no look passes and a Pistol Pete kind of flare to the game.
Even though Rubio is of age and actually got drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves to be somewhat of the face of the franchise along with forward Al Jefferson who has carried the franchise ever since the team traded Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics.
Biggest problem the young kid and the Minnesota Timberwolves face now is that Rubio is still wrapped up in contract with his Spanish club and will have to be bought out which hasn’t seemed to be an easy process.
Rubio’s presence with the Timberwolves will not exactly make them title contenders or set the sports betting world on fire, but it will almost certainly have some effect on online betting in the US as Minnesota will definitely be better with Rubio running the point.
